Porsche Unseen

Porsche Unseen

  • Porsche design studies from 2005 to 2019, previously kept under wraps and published here for the first time
  • An incomparable journey of discovery through the world of Porsche design!

When car companies present studies and prototypes, they allow a glimpse behind the scenes, a vision of what may come in the future. Apart from what is shown during official events and at fairs, there is an overwhelming number of drafts and models that remain hidden from the public for various reasons. This book achieves the impossible: a look at Porsche cars the public never laid eyes on – Porsche Unseen. Stefan Bogner was exclusively allowed to take pictures in the Porsche Design sanctum. The Porsche DNA is recognizable in any of the models shown, but the design is so new and unexpected that it suggests the existence of a parallel universe. A 1-litre Porsche? A coupé-like four seater with 911-looks? Single-seated roadsters with 1950’s flair? Stefan Bogner took photos of all of them – either as models or ready to drive. Jan Baedeker talked with Michael Mauer, Head of Design, and took down the enlightening background information. Join our extraordinary expedition of discovery through the world of Porsche Design! Porsche Water-Cooled Turbos: 1979-2019

Porsche Water-Cooled Turbos: 1979-2019

The first water-cooled Porsche Turbos were launched in 1979, evolving through Turbo variants of the front-engined 924, 944 and 968.  With the new millennium came the first of the water-cooled rear-engined 922 Turbos, and from 2017 turbos have been applied to the mid engined Boxster and Cayman models. In Porsche Water-Cooled Turbos, Johnny Tipler describes the progression of these popular cars from their introduction to the present day. Features include interviews with Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Walter Rohrl, Allan McNish, Jorg Bergmeister and Hans-Joachim Stuck.  The full development and design history is covered for all seven models including specification tables and detailed motorsport achievements.

Porsche Air-Cooled Turbos 1974-1996

Porsche Air-Cooled Turbos 1974-1996

Racing improves the breed, goes the saying; no marque has been as steadfastly diligent in this pursuit than Porshe. Porsche applied turbocharging to its racing cars in 1972 and, within a year, this technology had crossed over into its production cars: the first road-going 911 Turbo was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973.

Johnny Tipler tells the story of the air-cooled turbocharged 911s, starting with the 934 and 935 race cars that fostered the Type 930 in 1974. The 930 accounted for over 21,000 vehicle sales before being replaced by the 964 Turbo in 1990, followed by the 993 Turbo in 1995. With 300 colour photographs, many taken specially by renowned photographer Antony Fraser, Porsche Air-Cooled Turbos 1974-1996 also presents exclusive interviews with Klaus Ludwig, Jochen Mass and Nick Heidfeld, and includes full specification tables for each key model type. Foreword is by Alois Ruf.

Porsche 912: 50 Years

Porsche 912: 50 Years

The Porsche 912 is one of the most famous sports cars of all time, outselling the Porsche 911 almost two to one in 1966
• This book is a complete history of the development and design of the Porsche 912

When the Porsche 912 was introduced in the spring of 1965, some members of the staff were not quite happy with the new model, for it still had the four-cylinder engine of the 356 that was no longer in production, while the 911 already had the new six-cylinder, and had become a legend. However, the 911 was so expensive that many Porsche devotees in Germany could not, or did not want to, afford to buy it. For this reason, Porsche quickly needed a new, less expensive model so the 912 came into being, and from 1966 to 1969 about 32,000 vehicles were built.

Apart from the Porsche 912 Coupé (1965 to 1969) this book also presents the Porsche 912 Targa (1966 to 1969). Less well-known, but all the more intriguing, is the story of the Porsche 912E, built in 1976 just for the US market, and of which only 2099 specimens exist.

Porsche 904

Porsche 904

Porsche 904 – a road race car with a cult following

•Everything about the genesis and success story of the Carrera GTS, a coveted rarity among Porsche fans

•A monograph on a masterpiece of Porsche construction: steel box frame in combination with a plastic body

The 904, full name Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, was in many ways a special model for Porsche. Due to the unique design of Ferdinand Porsche, the sports car is affectionately called “Butzi’s masterpiece” and is still considered by many to be one of the most beautiful road racing cars. In a record-breaking development period of six months, the Porsche 904 was implemented in 1963. But not only that made this car a model in terms of innovation.

For homologation (the approval process) as a race car, about 100 units of the Porsche 904 were registered as road vehicles and sold to private customers. The demand was so great that the car soon became a highly exclusive rarity. The distinctive look that characterizes the Porsche design and the combination of technical innovations and low production costs did the rest to give the Porsche 904 a cult status that continues today.

Since its introduction in 1998, the water-cooled Porsche 911 has earned a reputation as one of the world’s greatest sports cars – equal to, if not better than, the legendary air-cooled 911 it replaced. Turbo 3.0 Porsche’s First Turbocharged Supercar

Turbo 3.0 Porsche’s First Turbocharged Supercar

The mid-1970s were dark times for the automotive industry, and darker still for those passionate about high-performance cars. Manufacturers worldwide, struggling to comply with new emissions and safety regulations, were finding it difficult to produce cars capable of delivering a satisfying driving experience. With one or two exceptions-very expensive models built in minute quantities-none did. The cars produced in these years were at best compromised; most were simply dreadful. The OPEC oil embargo had just turned everything upside down while safety and emissions standards were strangling performance and stifling innovation from manufacturers. It was an atmosphere of complete and utter despair, as though all had been lost. Then-out of nowhere-Porsche dropped a bombshell, announcing a turbocharged series production supercar that not only met regulatory requirements but also delivered blistering performance. The 3.0-liter Turbo was an instant sensation, inspiring enthusiasts from every corner of the world and offered hope that perhaps there was still a future for performance cars.

The second Parabolica Press title, Turbo 3.0 continues the theme of being carefully researched using the Porsche archives, private collections, period documentation and intensive study. In an attempt to cover everything an owner, restorer or enthusiast would want to know about the dawn of Porsche’s turbocharged supercar, Turbo 3.0 includes a considerable amount of material never before published: comprehensive discussions of original options, close-up photos of key details, scenes from factory production, coverage of special one-off models and period motorsports. This is the definitive book about Porsche’s immortal 3.0-liter Turbo and it is essential reading for anyone who has ever owned, driven or simply lusted after the first supercar of the modern era.

Porsche: Gli anni d’oro / The Golden Years

Porsche: Gli anni d’oro / The Golden Years

Iconic cars such as the 356s and the immortal 911s, extraordinary success stories in the classic endurance races, great champions and remarkable engineers. These are the principal ingredients of Porsche: The Golden Years, a book examining the full history of the legendary Stuttgart firm, with spectacular and previously unpublished images by photographer Franco Villani. The Porsche 356, with both closed and open bodywork, was the model that in 1948 officially inaugurated the catalogue of the celebrated Stuttgart firm. In that difficult period of reconstruction, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, artificer of the car and founder of the marque, was already an undisputed authority in the automotive field for having designed the Volkswagen Beetle, the people’s car. The Porsche 356s were “legitimate offspring” of the Beetle and soon found favour with the public: they were sporting cars that were easy to use in everyday life. This is the true Porsche “DNA”, confirmed with the launch of the 901, or rather the 911 that first saw the light of day in 1963, a model that soon became a planetary success story, a car capable of traversing the decades while maintaining intact its appeal. The Porsche name also evokes the innumerable victories obtained in legendary endurance races such as the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Targa Florio, in the World Rally Championship and in the great African raids such as the Paris-Dakar, as well as in Formula 1 as an engine supplier to McLaren in the early ‘80s.

Porsche 911R: The new book

Porsche 911R: The new book

The editions are numbered — the German version from 1 to 991, the English version from 1 to 1500. The book covers the early 911R of 1967 of which only 20 cars plus 4 prototypes had been manufactured as well as the new 911R from 2016, that had been sold out on the day it was launched on the exhibition in Geneva. The authors Christoph Mäder, Georg Konradsheim and Thomas Gruber spent one and a half years researching, writing and layouting this book. It comprises:

  • all races that the Porsche works team attended with the early 911R,
  • the story behind the development of both 911Rs,
  • the technic of both cars including engines, transmissions, suspension and aerodynamics,
  • a list of all chassis numbers.

The book “911 R” lets the reader feel as if he had visited the construction offices in Weissach. Over 15 Porsche engineers have been interviewed for this book.

The 911R is the father of all motorsport derivatives of Porsche’s 911 model. The story of the R is connected to Huschke von Hanstein, Ferdinand Piech as well as Vic Elford. Originally, it hadn’t been planned by Porsche to use the 911 as a flagship model for motorsports. The book is made up of two parts: the 911R with 210 hp of 1967 as well as the model from 2016 with 500 hp.

The development of the 911R during the 1960s, the efforts of the works team with the plastic 911, the engines that were used with the car (including the quad-cam type 916) and the world records that the car had set up in Monza are described. The second half of the book covers the 911R model year 2016 and dives into the story of how it came about, tells the story of how the R was derived from the GT3 and GT3RS and all available options. The technical development was given room with separate chapters for body, drivetrain, suspension and aerodynamics. A special feature is the list of all 991 units built with their respective color, wheels, interior and country specific equipment.

Specal 3D-illustrations were created exclusively for this book. They were printed on acetate foils to grant the reader an x-ray view of the packaging of the modern 911R. The design of the cover pays tribute to the car itself by resembling the interior with the brown/houndstooth combination. The book is protected by a silver slipcase which features the two stripes that are so characteristic for this car. The English version is graced by red stripes, the German version carries green stripes.

Porsche: Cars With Soul

Porsche: Cars With Soul

In Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, August 1939, the 60K10 project, under the supervision of one Professor Ferdinand Porsche, built a car in anticipation of a race, Berlin to Rome, that would never take place.  With this model, the idea for a light and aerodynamic car, with a small engine but remarkable performance was born.  Nine years later this idea bore fruit and the company released its first automobile, the Porsche 356,  which would launch the company into automotive history.
Porsche: Cars with Soul is a beautifully illustrated tribute to the commitment of Porsche to reach the highest level in motorsport, to the extraordinary effort of the drivers, engineers and mechanics who helped to achieve this, and of the remarkable link between Porsche and its passionate enthusiasts. It is also intended to applaud the commitment of the Porsche family to be present at races and other important events, since the beginning, making the Porsche fans feel part of a big and extraordinary family.

Porsche Boxster The 986 Series 1996-2004

Porsche Boxster The 986 Series 1996-2004

Whilst generating a huge amount of interest when shown as a concept car in 1993, buyers had to wait until 1996 for the production version of the Boxster. Told by a leading marque authority, this is the definitive story of Porsche’s affordable roadster from prototype stage to 2004, the year which signalled the end of the original 986 series.
