Red Wheels & White Sidewalls – Confessions of an Allard Racer

SOLD OUT

Bill Pollack, influential pioneer of the California sports car scene, first raced an MG at the 1950 Palm Springs event, but he is best known as the winning pilot of Tom Carsten’s famous red wheeled, Cadillac-powered, Allard J2.

This autobiography by one of the most successful West Coast motorsports racers, covers auto racing from 1949 to 1958 and California history from 1933 to 2002.

A foreword by Carroll Shelby and side-bar contributions by Phil Hill, John Fitch, William Edgar, Ruth Levy Raymond, Ginny Sims, and Mary Davis add additional perspectives to this vivid and often humorous picture of road racing in the fabulous fifties.

This book features 87 photos on coated paper for a total of 107 B&W illustrations, includes an appendix and index.

Formula 1: Car by Car 1950-59

Formula 1: Car by Car 1950-59

The formative years of the 1950s are explored in this fourth installment of Evro’s decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams.

When the World Championship was first held in 1950, red Italian cars predominated, from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati, and continued to do so for much of the period. But by the time the decade closed, green British cars were in their ascendancy, first Vanwall and then rear-engined Cooper playing the starring roles, and BRM and Lotus having walk-on parts. As for drivers, one stood out above the others, Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, becoming World Champion five times. Much of the fascination of this era also lies in its numerous privateers and also-rans, all of which receive their due coverage in this complete work.

Year-by-year treatment covers each season in fascinating depth, running through the teams — and their various cars — in order of importance. Alfa Romeo’s supercharged 1½-litre cars dominated the first two years, with titles won by Giuseppe Farina (1950) and Fangio (1951). The new marque of Ferrari steamrollered the opposition in two seasons run to Formula 2 rules (1952–53), Alberto Ascari becoming champion both times, and the same manufacturer took two more crowns with Fangio (1956) and Mike Hawthorn (1958). Maserati’s fabulous 250F, the decade’s most significant racing car, propelled Fangio to two more of his five championships (1954 and 1957). German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz stepped briefly into Formula 1 (1954–55) and won almost everything with Fangio and up-and-coming Stirling Moss. Green finally beat red when the Vanwalls, driven by Moss and Tony Brooks, won the inaugural constructors’ title (1958). Then along came Cooper, rear-engine pioneers, to signpost Formula 1’s future when Jack Brabham became World Champion (1959).alfa romeo, cooper, brm,

American Road Race Specials, 1934-70: Glory Days of Homebuilt Racers

American Road Race Specials, 1934-70: Glory Days of Homebuilt Racers

Once upon a time, there was a guy named Max Balchowsky who decided he wanted to beat Ferrari and Jaguar at their own game-road racing. The trouble was, he didn’t have the cash for a factory racer. So he built his own. Using a Ford homemade tube frame, a souped-up Buick V-8 and running on recapped whitewalls, Ol’ Yaller whipped them all.

Welcome to American Road Race Specials 1934-70. These were the glory days of road racing in the United States, from the first races between imported MGs to the world-winning Made-in-the-USA Scarabs and Chaparrals, and on toe the downfall of the Shadow.

This is the story of the men who built and ran their own homemade cars in pioneer SCCA and Cal Club races on town streets, airports and then the first purpose-built American racetracks. Here is Jim Hall, Lance Reventlow, Ken Miles, Carroll Shelby, Ak Miller, Balchowsky, Troutman and Barnes, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Roger Penske, George Follmer, and all the rest. . . .

And the cars: Ol’ Yaller, Cunningham, Scarab, Chaparral, Kurtis, Devin, Zerex Special, Bocar, Caballo de Hierro, Pooper, Shadow, Ferraris with Chevy V-8s and every other possible chassis-engine combination a racer could think of. Some were crude, others deceptively homespun; most were half hot rod, half sports car-all of them were unique and built with passion.

Each turn of a page delves deeper into the progress, and people driven world of Ford automobile design & engineering. All the individuals’ current and past who have worked within these walls continue to pave the way for mankind to go further.

Fast Forward: The Future of Cars – Cars of the Future

Fast Forward: The Future of Cars – Cars of the Future

These cars are futuristic, utopian, eccentric, and always ahead of their time. From models that were never presented to consumers to those produced as limited series, Fast Forward shows cars that pique people’s interest and enthusiasm. From cars never shown to those models that see small production runs, Fast Forward presents vehicles that are just as much sculpture as automobile. Iconic winglets adorn models from the 50s. Automobiles of the 70s appear to be works of science fiction rather than modes of transportation. Classic interpretations and vintage prototypes that hinted at the future of yesteryear. Every decade has it own ideas of the future. The timeline of concept cars is narrated through an alluring pairing of project images and stories from inside studio walls. Designers discuss the catalysts behind their creations from the first scribble upon a blank page to a 3D model to the roadways. Fast Forward showcases the past, present, and, in the true spirit of concept cars, the future of this intriguing and diverse realm.

Inventors & Amateur Engineers Sourcebook

Inspiration for everyone who likes to tinker in their home workshop!

The book is for everyone who likes to tinker in their home workshop! In Section 1: Ideas and Approaches, the author looks at how you can develop new projects and inventions. How to think laterally, how to get advice, and when you should stop theorising and start testing! In Section 2: Projects you can build, there is everything from a solar-heated cat or dog kennel – to a jet-powered scooter! From a simple and very cheap seismograph that’s sensitive enough to detect people walking up to your front door, to how you can build speakers into the walls and floor of your house. If you’d like to make an electric bike, you can see in detail how such a bike was achieved at home. There’s also cutting-edge technology (including developing tuned-mass dampers to reduce driving light vibration); a very sophisticated, fully suspended pedal-powered recumbent trike; and an aerodynamic electric car. You’d like to make a drill press or lathe tacho? – that’s covered as well. In fact, there are 19 different projects! Finally, want to know how can you get a whole lot of useful parts for nothing? In Section 3: Salvaging Parts, the author looks at the good bits you can find for nothing in discarded photocopiers, microwave ovens, cordless drills and air conditioners. The Inventors and Amateur Engineers Sourcebook has hours of entertainment packed into its pages. Browse it for an interesting read – or take it out to the home workshop and start putting the ideas straight into action!

Warner Brothers Hollywood’s Ultimate Back Lot

Warner Brothers Hollywood’s Ultimate Back Lot

Movie studios are the wondrous, almost magical locales where not just films, but legends, are created. Unfortunately, these celebrity playgrounds are, and always have been, largely hidden from public view. Although some movie studios offer tours, few guests from outside the Hollywood community have ever been witness to the artistry, politics, and scandals that routinely go on behind the soundstage walls and away from the carefully orchestrated scenes visible to them from their tram carts.

In this book, studio staff historian and Hollywood insider Steven Bingen throws open Hollywood’s iron gates and takes you inside the greatest and yet most mysterious movie studio of them all: Warner Bros. Long home to the world’s biggest stars and most memorable films and television shows, the Warner Bros. Studio lot functions as a small city and is even more fascinating, glamorous, and outrageous than any of the stars or movies that it has been routinely minting for more than ninety years. Accompanied by stunning behind-the-scenes photos and maps, and including a revealing backstory, this book is your ticket to a previously veiled Hollywood

The Jalopy Journal #3

The Jalopy Journal #3

It’s done. After working on this publication for more than 3-years, we (Myself, John Mearns, Jeff Norwell, and Coco Shinomiya) are finally ready to announce that The Jalopy Journal #3 is ready for your consumption. Frankly, I don’t know how to even begin to describe this book to you. So, let’s just start were we left off last time. In the description of Book #2, we said:
“The Jalopy Journal (in print) isn’t a magazine. It’s a book. And it’s a book unlike anything you’ve ever read before. Flipping through it is akin to walking through a museum. It has white walls, white floors, gorgeous abstract art, and a furiously inebriated curator. And that’s really the best way I can describe it.”
That all stands true for The Jalopy Journal #3 as well, only we made it even better. There’s over fifty more pages of content, an even higher quality vinyl cover, souped up paper, and an archival style sewn binding. We made no compromises. We pulled no punches.
This book is absolutely the best we could make it and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
