Before Clymer and before Haynes service manuals, there was J.B. Nicholson and Modern Motorcycle Mechanics.

Nicholson, together with his brother Lawrence, opened Nicholson Bros. Motorcycles in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1933. To this small city in the middle of the Canadian prairie they imported DOT, Calthorpe and Douglas motorcycles and by 1935 the brothers had transformed the business into a fledgling mail order parts supply house.

But it was a 25-year old J.B. (Bernie) Nicholson who published what could be considered one of the first comprehensive texts regarding the operation and maintenance of motorcycles of the day. In 1942 the first edition of Modern Motorcycle Mechanics was distributed widely. They sold the book themselves, and industry giants such as Johnson Motors bought books for resale in their showroom. Floyd Clymer himself ordered hundreds of copies for resale through his motoring catalogs.

Nicholson went on to revise his book six times, with editions appearing in 1945, 1948, 1953, 1965, 1969 and the final and seventh in 1974.

Over the years more than 100,000 copies of Modern Motorcycle Mechanics books have sold from Canada to England, India, South Africa, Australia and beyond.

A widowed and childless aunt played a notable role in the creation of ‘Carrozzeria Pinin Farina’. In 1930, she gave a million lire to her 37-year-old nephew Giovanni Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, who had demonstrated excellent skills working in the body shop owned by his older brother. With that capital, ‘Pinin’ started his own business, and quickly establishing himself for his creative genius and personality. With a spirit worthy of a great Renaissance artist, since the 1930s he has distinguished himself in establishing the success of Italian style in the world. Among the most important steps, the creation, immediately after the war, of the Cisitalia 202 Berlinetta, which totally influenced the style of sports cars, so much so that it earned a permanent place at the ‘Museum of Modern Art’ in New York.

A fascinating story, in which the artistic genius of the founder dominates, finding a worthy follower in his son Sergio, an engineering graduate, in the tradition of the typical Pininfarina philosophy: always innovative style and industrial development, at an unusual level for the sector.

A prestigious growth, unfortunately halted by the world economic crisis of the second decade of 2000, but which the engineer Paolo Pininfarina (3rd generation) controlled until it joined the giant ‘Mahindra’ group for a complete relaunch. In the history of the Turin workshop, the search for style and good taste have always come before pure financial interests. The number of cars ‘dressed’ by Pinin and his heirs (over 600 in just over 80 years) is surprising, but the overall quality level, which has never been compromised, is even more so. A true gallery of the best Italian style designed for brands with the most varied of traditions, for which Pininfarina has always chosen the right proposal. In addition to the numerous one-off pieces, which have often formed part of the history of the automobile (for example, the Ferrari 375 MM ‘Berlinetta Speciale’ for actress Ingrid Bergman), there are also cars produced in series by the most important manufacturers or by Pininfarina itself. Like the Lancia Aurelia B20 and B24, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, the Fiat 124 Spider and 130 Coupé. And it deserves a chapter all to itself, the sequence of Ferraris with the Pininfarina brand (over 160 models!), in many cases produced with the important contribution of Sergio Scaglietti’s body shop in Modena. And within the history of Pininfarina-Ferrari, an even smaller but highly prestigious chapter, linked to the four special models created exclusively for the ‘Avvocato’ Gianni Agnelli.

For many car enthusiasts, MG is synonymous with “sports car.” It is often credited with igniting a passion for European cars in postwar America at a time when roads were otherwise filled with the lumbering output of Detroit. In MG’s native England, the company’s cars filled roles from family transport to competition driving.

MG, as we think of it today, began in the 1920s, but its roots go back even further with a young William Morris. Initially working in the booming bicycle trade, he eventually branched into motorcycle and car repair with the fledgling Morris Garage (hence, MG) in 1907. By the mid 1920s, the successful Morris Garages was in a position to begin manufacture of its own cars under the MG name.

MG grew significantly in the years before World War II, building and racing its classic Midgets and Magnettes. World War II provided challenging times for the company as it did for the UK and much of the world. In the postwar period, a focus on sales outside England, and particularly in the United States, both defined MG’s product line and ensured its success. Legendary cars followed, including MG TC, TD, and TF followed by thoroughly modern MGA, MGB, MGB GT, and Midget. Magnettes and the 1100 offered options for those wanting sedans and more practical cars.

MG ownership moved through a number of UK companies in the postwar period as well as ownership by BMW and today’s SAIC, a Chinese-based company through which it operates as MG Motor. Highlights along the way included the MGB GT V8, MG Metro Group B rally car, and MGF. Based on its latest state-of-the-art EV platform, MG will soon launch an all-new roadster coming full circle over its century in business.
