This history of the Lotus Evora traces the genesis, context, manufacture and evolution of the Type 122 Evora and its derivative models. The Evora’s prowess as a grand touring sports car is demonstrated with the author’s international road trips, and its essence is detailed through in-depth interviews with leading personalities at Lotus involved with the design, development, construction and marketing programmes. This book contains all the technical data and statistics for the majority of the 1948 to 1958 Ferrari road and race cars. It was compiled by a knowledgeable author who lived in Modena at the time that these cars were being constructed, who was personally acquainted with Enzo Ferrari and had access to the factory documents during that time period. It includes the author’s road test experiences, technical specifications, tune up, adjustments, maintenance and repair information, detailed technical drawings, exploded views, wiring diagrams and lubrication charts. This book is a ‘must have’ for any Ferrari enthusiast or lucky owner of one of these early cars and should be in the library of any true Ferraristi. Originally published by Floyd Clymer in 1960 under the similar title of ‘The Ferrari Owner’s Handbook’, its description left much to be desired. For example, of the 174 pages there are 90 pages that are much closer to a repair and maintenance manual. Consequently, it’s more of a technical manual than a handbook.

Politics played an important part of course, as did BOAC’s tactics, and a ’who dunnit’ cast of politico-corporate events and machinations at the highest level of society during the dying days of Empire in 1960s Britain. The VC10 was the nation’s biggest jet airliner of its age and regarded as the world’s best looking airliner. It was safe, fast, and designed to take off from short runways in Africa and Asia, at the request of its main operator BOAC – the airline that would later go on to become today’s British Airways.
The VC10 and the larger Super VC10 were beloved by pilots and passengers alike and became icons of the 1960s. They were hugely popular all over the world; East African Airlines made its name with Super VC10s, and so too did Freddie Laker with his famed VC10 fleet.
Yet the VC10 was eclipsed by Boeing’s 707 which sold by the hundreds, despite the fact that the 707 was less capable and could not initially operate from the runways of the Commonwealth and old British Empire routes, as the VC10 undoubtedly could.
The men of the Vickers Company who created the VC10 would later go on to engineer Concorde and, of course, the rest is history. But the era of the VC10 was pivotal and, by exploring this historical period in depth and highlighting all the various impediments that stood in the way of success for the VC10, Lance Cole adds an important layer to our understanding of twentieth century history.

Hispano Suiza, a firm of sound Spanish tradition and origins, is little known to the new generations today. Great luxury automobiles made at the Hispano Suiza factories in Barcelona and Paris during the 1920s and 1930s are usually brought to mind to those who have heard of the company. However, Hispano Suiza developed other activities of considerable industrial, commercial, and strategic importance – aviation engines produced in Spain and France, and aircraft constructed only in Spain.
In 1923, Hispano Suiza established the Société Française Hispano Suiza in France. Although the highest percentage of the company’s assets was Spanish, Hispano Suiza became the first company in France to manufacture aviation engines and the main supplier for the Armée de l’Air until the 1960s.
