Drake remembers with clarity and detail the first legal drag races, early car shows in California and Oregon, speed trials at Bonneville and Madras, and the ingenuity of the men and women of the time who invented ways to modify the emerging rods and customs in ways to make life interesting.
This selection of essays celebrates the people who made hot rodding an American culture. Rediscover the fun of racing, hanging out, flirting and driving from the voice of someone who experienced the 1950s and has a passion for telling the story of old metal. His stories are authentic.
Albert Drake has been a practicing hot rodder since 1951, when he built a ’29 A-V8 Ford roadster. Over 400 of his articles have appeared in a variety of magazines including Street Rodder, Street Rod Action, Rodder’s Digest, Popular Cars, Hot Rod Mechanix, Street Rodding Illustrated and many more!

The 1950s was a golden era for Detroit, reflecting the endless optimism and futuristic view in America following World War II. Car designers and stylists were inspired by current day fighter jets, space age technology, and chrome. Their creations sported great chrome grilles, bullet-nosed bumpers, enormous tail fins, cockpit-styled dashboards, and frames as big as aircraft carriers. The allure and emotional appeal of these cars has been well document in countless books over the years. But without exception all of these titles look fabulous 50s vehicles as the sum of their parts. None focus specifically on what many consider to be the most distinguishing aspect of many of the cars from the fabulous 50s their front grilles. Great Grilles of the 50s provides a close-up view, both visually and in narrative form, of the best and most dynamic grilles of the era. This 11 x 8.5 inch coffee table size book features 104 all color pages on acid free paper with library quality binding.
David Tremayne’s acclaimed biography of Jochen Rindt was first published in 2010 and now, to honor the 50th anniversary of the Austrian’s death, Evro is reviving the book in paperback form.
Rindt was widely acknowledged as the fastest man in Formula 1 by the time he reached his peak in 1970, when he tragically lost his life at Monza in Italy, four races before the end of the season. Such was his pre-eminence that year that no rival could overcome his points total and he became the sport’s only posthumous World Champion. As his close friend Sir Jackie Stewart observed in this book’s foreword, “David Tremayne is a wonderful writer who has done Jochen great justice in the words that he has chosen to depict a remarkable man and a remarkable career.”
There are lots of books about the Norton Commando; about its history, performance, lineage, and the minutiae of its specification. But none of them will tell you what to look for when buying one secondhand. That’s what this book is about – it is a straightforward, practical guide to buying a used Commando. It doesn’t list all the correct colour combinations for each year, or analyse the bike’s design philosophy, or consider its background as part of a troubled industry – there are excellent books listed at the end of this one that do all of that – but it will help you avoid buying a dud. Point by point, it takes the reader through everything that needs looking at when buying a Commando, plus spares prices, which is the best model to buy for your needs, and a look at auctions, restorations and paperwork
The last of the ‘classic’ Nortons, the Commando remains a collector’s item, and many have been saved, restored and ridden – this book tells the reader how to be part of its ongoing story.
A celebration of aesthetic pleasure
A leading figure in the sector of car design (with important roles in the Peugeot-Citroën Group and at Pininfarina), the author draws his inspiration from the fundamental role that aesthetic gratification has always played in the relationship between man and the automobile.
Among the topics addressed, the birth and evolution of the profession of automotive designer, with extensive historical references, linked to the great ‘coachbuilders’ of the 1920-1960s period and to the evolution of the last 30 years, which led to the creation of the Style Centres of the major manufacturers, no longer integrated and therefore subordinate to technical management.
Starting from personal experience, considerable space is dedicated to the problems and choices that a car designer must inevitably face, reconciling the artistic side with the industrial context in which he operates. Concepts and rules that allow you to see the birth of a model that will be mass-produced, starting from the first sketches on a white sheet of paper. With concrete examples, referring to cars from Citroën, Peugeot, Maserati and Pininfarina.
The book also includes an appendix, dedicated to the most famous car designers of yesterday and today, which allows you to find out who created the style of famous cars, in many cases generically attributed to the manufacturer or the coachbuilder, where the designer himself was working…

Available in paperback to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Moonshots presents stunning photos of space and Earth from NASA’s archives—taken by Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle, and ISS astronauts using high resolution Hasselblad cameras.
In December 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 captured images depicting Earth hanging like a lonely fruit in the vast darkness of space. The social and spiritual shock of that photograph—and those which followed—never fully diminished, even as Apollo missions followed at an incredible pace, including the first lunar landing on July 20, 1969.
Moonshots is the definitive photographic chronicle of NASA space exploration, featuring more than 200 remarkable large-format photographs from that eventful era. Though a number of these images have been reproduced in books and magazines over the years, one attribute of this incredible collection has seldom been exploited: the sheer size and resolution of the photography. Aerospace author Piers Bizony scoured NASA’s archives of Hasselblad film frames to assemble the space fan’s ultimate must-have book.
This resulting volume extracts a stunning selection of photographs captured by astronauts using Hasselblad equipment, many of them seldom previously published. The Apollo voyages form the centerpiece of this amazing collection, but equally fabulous images from precursor Gemini missions are also featured, along with later photographs chronicling Space Shuttle missions and even the construction of the International Space Station.
The most detailed and authoritative Maserati history ever written
Maserati, the Family Silver is the result of 14 years of painstaking research by leading automotive historian Nigel Trow and claims the “best ever” title by setting out with greater accuracy and in more detail than ever before the story of Maserati, as well as that of the Maserati and Orsi families whose genius and passion created and sustained the marque over the years.
Not forgotten are the artisans, engineers and drivers, including such legends as Giulio Alfieri, Guerino Bertocchi, Tazio Nuvolari, Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, whose virtuosity helped burnish Maserati’s family silver.
Nigel Trow, whose previous titles including Lancia, the Shield and the Flag, Lancia Stratos and The Illustrated Lancia have established his reputation as one of the world’s foremost automotive historians, was granted unprecedented access to company and family archives, and was also able to interview many of the key individuals involved, unearthing hitherto unknown facts and debunking many of the myths and legends that have grown up around the marque.
Trow’s two-volume work, which extends to nearly 900 pages, also contains a large number of photographs and drawings from the Maserati archives, many previously unpublished, as well as a detailed index of race results and technical specifications for all Maserati cars and commercial vehicles.
Two volumes, total 872 pages, printed on heavyweight silk art paper.
