Alfa Romeo Prototipi 1948–1962

Alfa Romeo Prototipi 1948–1962

In times past, leading Alfa Romeo engineers were also great motorsports enthusiasts. Although they were presumably fully occupied with development of the firm’s production cars, in the years between 1948 and 1962 they nevertheless managed to create some spectacular sports prototypes. Many of these were created in close cooperation with outside firms.

Pioneering Spirit – The Story of Air France and Predecessors

Pioneering Spirit – The Story of Air France and Predecessors

Now one of the world’s leading airlines, Air France had its origins in the major restructuring of the French air transport industry through the merger of Air-Orient, Air Union, Société Générale de Transports Aérien (SGTA) and Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA), which became the Société Central pour l’Exploitation de Lignes Aériennes (SCELA). This was renamed Air France on 30 August 1933, following the takeover of the assets of the bankrupt Aéropostale. The above airlines themselves represented the consolidation of a crowded field of pioneering companies that emerged immediately after the First World War, both in France and in French possessions overseas, taking advantage of a fledgling but burgeoning aircraft industry.

Porsche Victory 2017

Porsche Victory 2017

This year, the Le Mans 24 Hours were unique once again. The highest temperatures in many years significantly increased the strain on the drivers and the equipment and the attrition rate was unusually high. Somehow, the fact that the Porsche with starting number 2, driven by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber still won the race in spite of a one-hour pit stop on Saturday evening somehow fits into the story of this extraordinary race. “It will take a while for me to understand all of this,” Timo Bernhard said. Toyota was superior in terms of speed, but lost two of its three cars within 30 minutes during the night while the third Toyota spent a long time in the pits. Thus, everything looked set for a win by the number 1 Porsche, but here, technical gremlins struck late on Sunday morning. After that, Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber secured Porsche’s 19th overall win at the Sarthe after an impressive comeback. In the LMGTE-Pro class, the new 911 RSR with mid-engine raced for the first time and just missed out on a podium finish at its Le Mans debut. In the LMGTE-AM class, the Dempsey-Proton team secured the best result for Porsche. In images and words, this book documents the achievements of all the Porsche teams at Le Mans, from the presentation of the cars and the test day, scrutineering, free practice and the qualifying sessions up to warm-up and the race. Off-track activities like the photo call with the winners from the previous year, the press conference and the drivers’ parade are covered as well.

The Cruel Sport: Grand Prix Racing 1959-1967

SOLD OUT

It was an era of daring, dashing drivers piloting incredibly powerful race cars around fast and legendary circuits with only primitive safety equipment to spare them disaster. The book includes sections covering the drivers, cars, factories, practice sessions, race day races and, inevitably, accidents. The text is incredibly compelling, as would be expected from a world-class writer. The design and photo presentation remain true to the original edition, published in 1963, and are supplemented by a new introduction and epilogue and revised captions. A rare period piece certain to delight racing fans.

Baillon Collection A Sensational Barnfind

Baillon Collection A Sensational Barnfind

“Found sheltering in a garage was one of just three Maserati A6G 2000 Berlinettas with coachwork by Frua, dating from 1956. And then, beneath piles of magazines, they discovered something even more exciting… a Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, with covered headlights, a car whose first owner was comedian Gérard Blain… Blain sold the Ferrari to actor Alain Delon, who was on several occasions photographed at the wheel – accompanied, in 1964, by Jane Fonda.”” Classic Driver

A Maserati A6G 2000 Gran Sport. A Facel Vega Excellence. A Hispano-Suiza H6B. A Bugatti 57 Ventoux. Alain Delon’s Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider. Several Talbot-Lago, Delahaye and Voisin – the list of classic automobiles, forgotten for decades on an estate in Échiré in south-western France, is almost unbelievable. That was not what the owner, the haulier Roger Baillon, had in mind. He intended to establish the first automobile museum of France before financial setbacks forced him to sell part of his impressive collection. What was left of his dream, his descendants have now handed to other collectors.
Before the cars were auctioned in early 2015, French photographer Rémi Dargegen took pictures of the incredible “Baillon Collection”. When the photo sessions at Château Gaillard started, Rémi Dargegen had not expected to find such a huge treasure trove of classic automobiles: “”Unbelievable, just unbelievable. This place is unique. What is most impressive, is the sheer number of cars that were stored in the barns.”” That enthusiasm is reflected in his photographs, presented for the first time in this book: Baillon Collection. It is also the first publication of a “barnfind”; historically unique and outstanding in dimension.
