The Volkswagen Golf Story: 40 Years of the Second People’s Car

The Volkswagen Golf Story: 40 Years of the Second People’s Car

The Volkswagen Golf is a motoring paradox, seemingly never really changing its look but always pushing technical development forwards, a ‘classless’ car which still carries a ‘premium’ feel about it.

The Golf didn’t invent the idea of the front-wheel-drive hatchback, but its interpretation established the template that others would follow and the benchmark by which they are still judged today.

Marking its 40th anniversary, this meticulously researched book celebrates the Golf in the fullest detail yet. Containing over 300 photographs and much original material, it is both a timely reminder of the Golf’s enduring appeal and a fitting tribute to a motoring legend.

Air Boss

Air Boss

Jack Warner was the son of an Alaskan bush plane pilot. He shot out his TV when he was ten. Uncle Kenny taught him to make Old Fashioneds in the 5th grade.Jack learned to fly at twelve, braving storms, crash landings and wild animals to save lives. After crashing on a snowy glacier, he rebuilt the broken landing gear with bailing wire and duct tape.As an Air Force fighter pilot, he witnessed U.S. pilots being shot down over North Vietnam out of reach of our rescue helicopters. After scamming general’s jeeps and golf carts to get suspension parts, he built a bush plane. He rescued a downed pilot but the second one was killed. Urged to continue by a U.S. soldier who escaped from a Vietcong prison camp, he kept going. After rescuing 21 pilots, he earned the moniker, “Black Jack” Warner. After retiring from the Air Force, he headed for the good ‘ol USA. On the way home, a high stakes poker game in Hawaii changed his life. As a new private pilot, he flew celebrities, delivered priceless jewels and one of a kind collector cars. Jack piloted a TV news airplane but ended up crashing into the station’s helicopter.Warner bought “mothballed” planes and brought them back to life to start an air cargo business. Jack’s staff of “moles” went dumpster diving to get valuable intel info on competitors. Guerilla tactics like these helped him become the largest cargo carrier in the world.Jack once volunteered to fly a water dropping airplane, saving the lives of eight firefighters. But, he was the most proud of rescuing five Americans from Iraq, right under Saddam Hussein’s nose. His career of a never ending trampoline of ups and downs kept his life anything but boring.

Giugiaro: Masterpieces of Style

Giugiaro: Masterpieces of Style

A volume devoted to Giugiaro and Italdesign could hardly not be included in the Masterpieces of style series.
Giugiaro is one of the most prestigious names in the history of automotive design, synonymous with iconic cars such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT and Alfetta, the Volkswagen Golf, the Audi 80, the Fiat Panda, Uno and Punto, the Lancia Delta, Thema and Prisma and the Maserati Bora, Ghibli and Merak, to mention but a few of the most successful designs to carry the Giugiaro name. Born in 1938 at Garessio in the province of Turin, Giugiaro honed his professional skills at Bertone and then at Ghia before setting up on his own when founding Giugiaro Italdesign in 1968. Today the firm is as active as ever and has been responsible for concept cars such as the Caimano, the Iguana and the Canguro, all based on Alfa Romeo mechanicals, and the Asso di Picche and the Quadri on respectively Audi and BMW chassis. This monograph covers this long technical and stylistic history, drawing on a clear, comprehensive text and hundreds of photographs, many of which previously unpublished. Luftwaffe Advanced Aircraft Projects to 1945, Vol. 1: Fighters & Ground-Attack Aircraft, Arado to Junkers

Luftwaffe Advanced Aircraft Projects to 1945, Vol. 1: Fighters & Ground-Attack Aircraft, Arado to Junkers

“Among Midland’s most successful aviation books have been the three Luftwaffe Secret Projects titles. Ingolf Meyer, the artist who worked on Luftwaffe Secret Projects Volume 1 Fighters 1939-1945 has, since the publication of that book, continued his research into German experimental aircraft in the era of the Third Reich. He has unearthed a remarkable range of further secret projects and experimental aircraft which did not appear in the earlier volumes. This huge archive of research will now be published in an estimated four volumes over the next few years, starting with this book.
This work covers fighters, night-fighters and attack aircraft, alphabetically by manufacturer. This first volume will cover aircraft, projects and designs produced by manufacturers from Arado through Junkers, while the second volume will cover those from the manufacturers Lippisch to Zeppelin.

Over the course of this new series, approximately 40 percent of the aircraft discussed and illustrated will not have appeared in the original series. In order to address the many new aircraft featured in these books, their style will be markedly different from the earlier volumes. They will contain more illustrations and less text. Normally one aircraft will be covered on each page. For many, it was the illustrations which made such an impact when Luftwaffe Secret Projects was first published. Increasing the number of illustrations in the new series will only enhance the appeal of these books.”

A highly illustrated history of German experimental secret project fighters and ground-attack aircraft in alphabetical order starting with those manufactured by Arado and ending with Junkers. This first volume in a new series reveals a remarkable range of secret projects and experimental aircraft that did not appear in the very popular Luftwaffe Secret Projects series. Aircraft, projects and designs are detailed, with approximately 175 color illustrations. Historians, aviation enthusiasts, and modelers will find this book a valuable resource.

Mount Lowe Railway

Mount Lowe Railway

“Opened with great fanfare on July 4, 1893, the Mount Lowe Incline Railway was hailed as “Earth’s Grandest Mountain Ride.” Built by Civil War balloonist Thaddeus S. C. Lowe and railroad engineer David J. Macpherson in the mountains above Altadena and Pasadena in Los Angeles County, this funicular was operated for 43 years and served nearly four million passengers from around the world. Where else could one find four hotels, an observatory, the world’s largest searchlight, a dance hall, miniature golf, a zoo, horseback riding, tennis, and snow capped peaks, all within a day’s journey from the Pacific Ocean and downtown Los Angeles? The San Gabriel Mountains continue to be a great natural resource and recreational escape for many Angelenos, but the spectacular railway lives on only in these vintage photographs.

John Margolies: Roadside America

John Margolies: Roadside America

The native genius of America’s mid-era automobile culture

Before the advent of corporate communications and architectural uniformity, America’s built environment was a free-form landscape of individual expression. Signs, artifacts, and even buildings ranged from playful to eccentric, from deliciously cartoonish to quasi-psychedelic. Photographer John Margolies spent over three decades and drove more than 100,000 miles documenting these fascinating and endearingly artisanal examples of roadside advertising and fantasy structures, a fast-fading aspect of Americana.

This book brings together approximately 400 color photographs of Main Street signs, movie theaters, gas stations, fast food restaurants, motels, roadside attractions, miniature golf courses, dinosaurs, giant figures and animals, and fantasy coastal resorts. In an age when online shopping and mega-malls have reconfigured American consumerism, stripping away idiosyncrasy in favor of a bland homogeneity, Margolies’s elegiac 30-year survey reminds us of a more innocent unpredictable and colorful past.

Hidden Glory

Hidden Glory

“The story of the world’s longest surviving customer racing car manufacturer.

The story of the Crosslé Car Company has in many ways been one of the best-kept secrets in the motor racing world. During the past half century this discrete little company which is hidden away in the Holywood Hills, close to the club where the worlds number one golfer Rory McIllroy practiced his trade, has produced over a thousand cars that have won numerous championships in Ireland, the UK, the European Continent and particularly America.

Under the shroud of the Northern Ireland troubles a dedicated team led by company’s founders John and Rosemary Crosslé have produced formula and sports racing cars that have started the carrears of grand prix stars such as Nigel Maunsell, John Watson, Derek Daly, David Kennedy, Martin Donnelly, and Eddie Irvine.

Now ‘Hidden Glory’, written by the well known journalist, television producer and race commentator Alan (Plum) Tyndall and ably assisted by Caroline Crosslé and the company’s current owner Paul McMorran, uncovers this remarkable tale of engineering ingenuity and charts the achievements of the racing drivers who have used the Ulster build products across the world.

“It has been interesting working with Alan, Caroline and Paul in the preparation of ‘Hidden Glory’. Rosemary and I have enjoyed raking through some old cuttings and great memories and I congratulate all those who have contributed to its content. I remember the Crosslé story pretty well and certainly this is a pretty good attempt at telling it!” John Crosslé, Founder.

The 230 page hard cover book contains numerous previously unpublished illustrations
