46: The Birth of Porsche Motorsport tracks Porsche’s successful rise after World War II. Porsche overcame multiple setbacks and went on to break records in their first year of racing at Le Mans, the Liege-Rome-Liege Rally, and Montlhéry. The success of SL 356/2 063 launched the competitive juggernaut that is Porsche Motorsport today.
After arriving in the US, the car enjoyed racing victories under John von Neumann, and its resultant body shape helped predict and define Porsche’s future commercial success. In 1982, SL 356/2 063 became a mainstay at the Monterey Historic Races.

Porsche is a world-renowned brand that is known best for producing highly sought-after sports cars and exotic cars and more recently for high-performance sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and high-tech luxury electric cars. Additionally, Porsche is a world-dominating sports car racing brand with factory-built-and-backed motorsport activities dating to the early 1950s, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright more than any other carmaker, dominating sports car racing, endurance racing, and championship-level rallying around the world.
Enthusiasts at all levels generally recognize and can identify on sight Porsche’s most iconic and mainstay models, such as the original 356 models of the 1950s and early 1960s, the seminal 911 first shown in 1963 and still in production nearly seven decades later, and perhaps the mid-engine 914. Each of these model platforms contain many subsets of special-edition versions built to higher levels of style, performance, luxury, or rarity. “Only 500 men will ever drive it”
This was the slogan that Porsche chose to advertise its new elite model, which, under the name Carrera RS, was supposed to change the course of history. The first 911 Carrera RS was a true stroke of genius on the part of Porsche: The car, only 500 units of which actually needed to be built for homologation purposes and which originally left the sales department far from convinced, turned into an unexpected sales hit. Within a very short time, the Carrera RS cemented its status as the dream car par excellence for sports car fans. Although the original, somewhat naive idea had been to only produce five hundred of these cars, in the end more than three times that number were made and sold. In the summer of 1973, production ended after 1,580 units had been made.
The new Carrera RS of the 964 generation became a worthy successor to the legend. Nevertheless, it took a full 18 years before the legitimate successor to the Carrera RS 2.7 was presented. Legendary Porsche racing engineer Roland Kussmaul tells us why it took so long in an exclusive interview.

The Porsche 993 RS became the last classic Carrera RS. The last classic 911 RS was presented in January 1995 . As far as many fans of the ‘Eleven were concerned, its attractive design crowned the 911 RS of the 993 generation as the most beautiful Carrera RS of all time. In this last air-cooled 911 RS, the engineers achieved a particularly harmonious synthesis of sportiness and comfort.

Peter Falk and Porsche, 33 years of passion and devotion: As their race director and one of the leading figures in their experimental department, Peter Falk contributed significantly to the character of the sports cars from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen – both on the race track and on the road.
From the first 901 right through to the very last air-cooled Type 993, every Porsche 911 bears the signature of Peter Falk. He joined the company in 1959 and quickly rose through the ranks to head various testing departments. In the mid-sixties, Falk also took over the tactical and technical leadership of the factory’s “Rennsport” team. In 1981, he was appointed as race director and led Porsche throughout its most successful era of competition. “His” team won at Le Mans, became World Sports Car Champions, conquered the Paris-Dakar Rally, and was victorious in Formula 1 with the TAG Turbo engine.
